Frequently asked questions

What formats are supported?

You can convert to MP4, WEBM, MOV, MKV, AVI, FLV, or GIF, and upload MP4, WEBM, MOV, M4V, or MKV source files.

Will I lose quality?

Original (the default) keeps your source resolution and encodes at a near-lossless bitrate. High, Medium, and Low cap the resolution at 1080p/720p/480p and reduce the bitrate for a smaller file, in exchange for some quality.

Can I cancel a conversion?

Yes. While a file is uploading or converting, use Cancel to stop it - your file selection stays in place so you can adjust settings and try again.

Does this actually convert in my browser?

Yes. Drefly converts your video locally, using the same encoders a desktop app would use, compiled to run in the browser. Nothing is uploaded - conversion works even without an internet connection once the page is loaded.

Is there a file size limit?

There's no fixed file size limit since conversion runs entirely on your device - it's bound only by what your browser and hardware can handle. Very large files may take longer, and on some devices or browsers a very large file may not be supported at all.

What if my file is already in the format I picked?

We'll let you know it's already that format and ask if you'd like to convert it anyway to change the quality. If you don't need that, nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Is the video converter really free?

Yes. Converting video is completely free, with no signup, no watermark on your download, and no daily limit.

Can I convert video on my phone?

Yes. Convert Video works in any modern mobile browser on iPhone and Android. Open this page on your phone, upload a video from your gallery or camera roll, and download the converted file straight to your device.

How fast will my conversion be?

It depends on your file and the format you pick. Converting between MP4 and WEBM is usually the quickest, often finishing in seconds right on your device. Converting to MOV, MKV, or GIF takes a bit longer since more work is needed, and AVI or FLV take longer still since they run through an in-browser software encoder, but it all still happens on your device without uploading anything. Very large files take proportionally longer, and older browsers that can't run local conversion won't be able to convert the file at all.
