Frequently asked questions

Where is my reel processed?

Your reel is put together entirely in your browser. If you export in the same format your clips already use, nothing ever leaves your device. If you pick a different export format, that conversion step is sent to Drefly's servers for encoding and the file is deleted right after - either way you can watch the export progress live.

How many clips can I add?

As many as you like. Add clips one at a time or in a batch, then drag the blocks on the clip strip into the order you want.

Can I cut a clip into pieces?

Yes, move the playhead to where you want the cut, away from the clip's edges, and use Split clip at playhead to break it into two clips you can trim or reorder independently.

Can I add captions to my reel?

Yes, add a caption and set its wording, start and end time, position, size, and color. Add as many captions as you need.

Can I load clips or music from a link?

Yes, paste a link from YouTube, X, TikTok, Facebook, or hundreds of other sites, or a direct link to a file, for either a clip or the music track.

What file format do I get?

Choose MP4 or WEBM before you export. Both play in any modern browser and most media players - if your browser can't produce the one you picked, Drefly uses the other automatically.

What happens if my exported reel is large?

If the exported file is over about 25MB, we'll ask for your email address first and send you a secure download link once it's ready, instead of keeping the tab open.

Why does Drefly need my email for large files?

Only to send you the one download link for this export. We don't add you to a mailing list, send marketing emails, or share your address with anyone.

I haven't received the email yet - what should I do?

Large files convert in the background and can take a few minutes. Check your spam or junk folder, since first-time senders sometimes land there. If it's been more than 15-20 minutes, try again with a smaller file or a lower quality setting.

Is email delivery free, and is my file safe?

Yes - every Drefly tool, including email delivery for large files, is completely free with no signup required. Your exported file is stored only long enough to be downloaded and is automatically deleted after 24 hours either way; you can also delete it early from the download page.

What size should a reel be for Instagram or TikTok?

Use the 9:16 vertical crop setting - that's the standard size for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts. Reel Maker applies this crop to your whole reel as you build it.

Is Reel Maker free to use?

Yes. Making and exporting reels is completely free, with no signup, no watermark, and no limit on how many reels you make.

How fast will my export be?

It depends on your clips and the format you pick. Exporting to MP4 or WEBM is usually the quickest, often finishing in seconds right on your device. Exporting to MOV, MKV, AVI, FLV, or GIF takes a bit longer since more work is needed, but it still happens on your device without uploading anything. Very large reels, or older browsers that can't handle exporting locally, are sent to our servers to convert instead - these take longer and, for bigger files, we'll email you a download link once it's ready so you don't have to keep the tab open.
