FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where is my recording processed?

The recording itself happens entirely in your browser - nothing is uploaded to Drefly's servers while you record, and the video or audio is captured and saved on your own device. If you then change the output format from the one it was recorded in, that final file is sent to Drefly's servers to be converted and is deleted afterward.

Can I record my webcam over my screen, like Loom?

Yes. Choose "Screen + camera" and your webcam appears as a circular bubble in the corner of the recording.

What file format do I get?

Recordings are saved as WebM in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, or MP4 on Safari - both are playable in any modern browser and most media players.

Why did the browser ask me for permission?

Screen, camera, and microphone access all require your explicit, one-time permission per site - that's your browser protecting you, not something Drefly can skip.

Is there a limit on recording length or file size?

No. Recording happens entirely on your device, so there's no length or file size limit - record for as long as you need.

What happens if my converted recording is large?

If you change the output format and the converted file is over about 25MB, we'll ask for your email address first and send you a secure download link once it's ready, rather than keeping the tab open.

Why does Drefly need my email for large files?

Only to send you the one download link for this conversion. We don't add you to a mailing list, send marketing emails, or share your address with anyone.

I haven't received the email yet - what should I do?

Large files convert in the background and can take a few minutes. Check your spam or junk folder, since first-time senders sometimes land there. If it's been more than 15-20 minutes, try again with a smaller file or a lower quality setting.

Is email delivery free, and is my file safe?

Yes - every Drefly tool, including email delivery for large files, is completely free with no signup required. Your converted file is stored only long enough to be downloaded and is automatically deleted after 24 hours either way; you can also delete it early from the download page.

Is the screen recorder really free?

Yes. Recording your screen, camera, or both is completely free, with no signup, no watermark, and no limit on recording length or file size - a genuine free alternative to Loom.

Can I record my screen on my phone?

Camera recording works on mobile browsers, but screen recording needs a desktop browser like Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, since phone browsers don't support capturing the screen this way.

Where are my recordings saved?

By default, recordings are saved locally in your browser on this device. Unlock with your passkey to also connect a cloud drive, which lets you access recordings from other devices and create a shareable link.

How do I get a shareable link for a recording?

Unlock your drive, find the recording under Your recordings, and tap the share icon. Pick a format and tap Create link - Drefly saves a copy to your drive's share folder and gives you a drefly.pro link. Tap the icon again anytime to copy the same link.

Who can view a recording I share, and can they download it?

Anyone with the link can watch the recording and leave a comment, but there's no download option on the shared page - it's play-only. The link isn't listed publicly, so treat it like any unlisted link and only send it to people you want to see it.
