Why I Built Drefly (and Why It's Still a Weekend Project)

Drefly started the way most small projects start: I was annoyed. I needed to turn a stack of images into one PDF, and every tool I found wanted me to sign up first, watch an ad, or pay for a "pro" plan just to download a file I'd already made for free somewhere else. So one weekend, instead of looking for tool number six, I opened an editor and built my own.

That first version did exactly one thing - images to PDF - on a single page, with no login screen in sight. It worked, a couple of friends used it, and I kept going. Tool by tool, weekend by weekend, that one page turned into what Drefly is today: a full toolkit for PDFs, Office files, images, video, and a handful of AI powered tools, all sitting behind one address instead of a dozen different websites.

Still a weekend project, on purpose

Drefly isn't backed by a large team or a big roadmap meeting. It's a project I keep improving in the time around everything else - fixing a rough edge on an existing tool, shipping a new one when a task keeps coming up, tightening the details nobody but me will probably ever notice. That's a feature, not an apology: it means Drefly changes because someone actually needed the change, not because a quarterly plan said so.

What's actually inside Drefly

"A toolkit for files" can mean almost anything, so here's the actual list of what's live right now, grouped the same way you'll find it in the menu at the top of this page:

• PDF Tools - Merge PDF, Split PDF, Compress PDF, Edit PDF, PDF to Images, Images to PDF, Annotate & Share, Extract Media, and the AI powered PDF to JSON for pulling structured data straight out of a document.
• Office Tools - Word to PDF, PDF to Word, Excel to PDF, PDF to Excel, and PowerPoint to PDF, for moving between office formats without opening a desktop app.
• Downloaders - a general Downloader, an Audio Extractor, and an Image Grabber for saving media straight from a link.
• AI Tools - AI Summarizer, Translate PDF, PDF to Markdown, and Transcribe Audio & Video, for turning long documents and recordings into something you can skim in seconds.
• Image Tools - Compress Image, Convert Image, and Resize Image, built to keep as much quality as possible while doing it.
• Video Tools - Crop Video, Clip Video, Reel Maker, and a browser based Record tool for capturing your screen without installing anything.

Every one of those opens straight to the tool, no account wall in between. New tools get added to this list the same way the rest of the site was built - one weekend at a time, usually because a real task needed one.

What makes Drefly different

There's no shortage of file tools online. What's rarer is a set of them without the usual catch. Here's what that means in practice:

• No signup, ever. Every tool is open the moment you land on the page. There's no account to create and no email to hand over just to convert a file.
• No payment walls. Nothing on Drefly is locked behind a "pro" tier, a credit system, or a paywall. If a tool is live, it's free to use, fully.
• No file size limits and no file count limits. Drop in one file or fifty, a small file or a huge one - Drefly doesn't add an artificial cap on top. The only real limit is your own device and connection speed.
• No stored data. Files are processed in memory to complete your request and aren't kept afterward. The one exception is very large files, which use temporary storage for up to 24 hours purely to get the job done, then are automatically and permanently cleaned up. Nothing sits around waiting to be found later.
• Everything in one place. PDF tools, Office conversion, image tools, a media downloader, video editing, and AI powered tools all live under the same roof, so you're not bouncing between five different sites for one task.

Why keep it free

The tools I was frustrated with weren't broken because the underlying tech was hard, they were frustrating because they were built to squeeze a sign-up or a payment out of a five-second task. Drefly is built the other way around: pick a tool, drop in your file, get the result. That's the whole interaction, and I'd rather keep it that way than bolt on friction later just because it's common practice elsewhere.

What's next

More tools are coming, and existing ones keep getting faster, more reliable, and easier to use. Some of that work is invisible - better error handling, quicker processing, cleaner interfaces - and some of it will show up as brand new tools entirely. The plan, such as it is, stays the same: build the thing I'd actually want to use, and keep it free while doing it.
